Keynote Speakers for FAA Annual Conference Announced

A speaker from the renowned Disney Institute and a champion of the Discovery Channel's Eco Challenge will provide the opening an closing keynote presentations to more than 1,300 multifamily professionals at Camp FAA, the 2017 FAA Annual Conference & Trade Show October 11-13 at Disney’s Contemporary Resort in Lake Buena Vista.

Disney’s long-standing reputation for quality service is not just magic; it is built on a sound service philosophy consistently applied. Attendees will hear from a Disney Institute speaker how they can use Disney principles in their own companies and communities. At Disney, everyone strives to exceed customer expectations every day because processes are designed to meet this goal. Business insights and Disney illustrations to bring the concepts to life will show how this pursuit of excellence can be adapted forthe unique needs of any organization.

Yvonne Camus, a successful team member in Discovery Channel’s Eco Challenge adventure race, believes ordinary people (like herself) can achieve extraordinary things — if they know the true ingredients of success: grit, teamwork, commitment, perseverance, and enthusiasm for life. Her rookie team of amateur athletes used communication skills, respect for one another, and practical savvy to become the first inexperienced team to complete the grueling competition. With amazing visuals and funny, insightful stories, Camus helps her listeners see the potential for grit and greatness in themselves and others.

New Dates for May Board and PSC Meetings, Lyceum Module

Because of several conflicts with local affiliates, the dates for the May meetings have been changed to Monday, May 8 and Tuesday, May 9.

All meetings will take place at the Hyatt Coconut Point, Bonita Springs.

FAA Leadership Lyceum Students Envision the Future of Apartment Associations

At the Florida Apartment Association’s Leadership Lyceum Module I, members of local affiliates gathered to learn, brainstorm, and grow.

The Leadership Lyceum program is designed to give members the opportunity to absorb knowledge that often helps them attain leadership roles within their local affiliate and beyond. The first of three modules took place Feb. 6 during the 2017 FAA Legislative Conference in Tallahassee.

Before students broke off into brainstorming groups, they took part in an icebreaker and listened to an introduction to the power of associations. They heard that approximately 150,000 501(c)(6) associations exist in the U.S., three new associations form every business day, and associations are the largest provider of adult education services in the country. The main takeaway from the introduction was that the strength of FAA, and any association, is the sense of ownership and involvement of its members. To fortify this idea, Lyceum students separated into groups to brainstorm ideas about the future of FAA and its local affiliates.

When asked how an association can remain a critical part of its members’ success in an age of online information and competition from suppliers and management companies, one group had the idea to "create a website or app that can pull market survey data for communities in a given region." This group also suggested "setting up a vendor directory that will showcase past job pricing and satisfaction as a resource for property managers and as a form of advertising to the vendor."

Another brainstorming question dealt with how an association can encourage and challenge its volunteer leaders to embrace their responsibility. One group had an idea to create a mandate that would encourage current leaders to identify, nominate, and mentor future leaders and participants, which would lead to more overall growth in the association.

Students had a variety of ideas for how to improve FAA as a whole. One group offered the idea of creating leadership advancement opportunities through education, mentoring, and industry involvement with new education classes offered at the state and local level. Another group expressed desire for more basic maintenance courses that would enhance awareness and involvement.

Ideas regarding how FAA and its affiliates can work together to create a strategic collaboration that benefits all included one group’s suggestion for FAA to share more ideas with local affiliates and vice versa.

FAA’s Product/Service Council Presents: Supplier Members Education Seminars

A workshop on Sales EQ and a session on Understanding Yourself and Others through DISCflex Assessments are planned for Monday, May 8, 1-4:30 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Coconut Point Resort & Spa in Bonita Springs.

Registration for this two-part program is complimentary for all supplier members of FAA affiliates. A brief PSC business meeting will take place between the two sessions.

Email Ralph@faahq.org to register.

Sales EQ Workshop

Interpersonal skills (responding to the emotions of others) and intrapersonal skills (managing one’s own disruptive emotions) are essential to success in sales. Sales professionals who invest in developing and applying sales EQ — sales-specific emotional intelligence — gain a decisive competitive advantage in today’s marketplace, where ubiquitous information and the speed of technology have made simply differentiating on products, services, or even price more difficult than ever.

The workshop will be presented by Keith Lubner, an adviser and mentor to several leading organizations on strategies, tactics, and programs to accelerate growth. He is considered a world-renowned expert in channels, sales, marketing, and leadership.

Understanding Yourself and Others through DISC

DISCflex Assessments are a great way to get to know yourself and others. Attendees will learn about four quadrants of behavior — dominant, influencing, steady, and compliant — and how each affects our everyday lives. Learn how to communicate using behavior patterns. Learn how to recognize people’s primary communication preferences and how to adjust yours to match theirs.

Presenter Hellen Davis, Indaba Global Coaching CEO and owner, is an executive officer and founder of Indaba Health and Wellness LLC, a management consulting, e-learning, and training corporation. Clients include executives and leaders from dozens of Fortune 100 corporations and public sector agencies.
